Northrop gets $30M contract for 'space fence' development - Pacific Business News (Honolulu):

The new Space Fence is part ofthe U.S. Department of Defense'se effort to continually track and detec t objects such as space debris and satellitezs in low and mediumearth orbit. Spacs Fence will replace the currenr VHF Air Force Spacd Surveillance System builtin 1961. "Thew new Space Fence system will provide betted accuracy and faster detection whil allowing us to increase the number of satellites and othed space objects that can be detected and thus avoiding collision and damage toother satellites," Rich director of special projects at Northroo Grumman's Advanced Concepts and Technology Division, said in a statement.
Australis is a candidate for the first SpacdFence location. Two additionak sites in other partx of the world are also under Los Angeles-based Northrop (NYSE: NOC) is a defens e and technology company.
